PLANT FAMILY: Costaceae
BOTANICAL NAME: Costus erythrocoryne
FORMAL SCIENTIFIC NAME: Costus erythrocoryne K.Schum.
STATUS :Accepted
CONTINENT: Neotropical
SYNONYMS:
,

BOTANICAL NOTES:
This is an accepted neo-tropical Costus species described by Schumann in 1904, Das Pflanzenreich. It is described by Maas in Flora Neotropica as a terminal flowering species with red non-appendaged bracts and yellow tubular flowers. This species seems to be consistent in producing a basal inflorsecence on a leafless (or nearly leafless) shoot. The plants I have seen have been densely puberulous on the stems with a deeply lobed ligule that is dark purple in contrast to the green stems.

The type specimen is from Iquitos, Peru and is quite common in that area. GBIF records include one recorded collection near Leticia in Colombia and one in Ecuador, Pastaza.

Holotype: Collected in 1902 by Ernst Ule in Peru, Loreto, Maynas, near Iquitos.

ACCESSION NOTES:
I have found this species to be difficult to grow and have lost several collections. Currently I have R3205 from John Mood, but it has not flowered here.
