BOTANICAL NOTES:
Costus erythrocoryne is an accepted species of neotropical Costus first described in 1904 by Karl Schumann in Das Pflanzenreich. The holotype was collected in 1902 near Iquitos, Peru by Ernst Ule was destroyed in Berlin but a lectoype is in Geneva. It flowers on a separate leafless shoot, with red non-appendaged bracts and yellow tubular flowers. It is distinguished from similar species by the sheaths, ligules, petioles and lower side of leaves being densely puberulous. The margins of the bracts, bracteoles and calyx are fibrous. The plants I have seen at the type locality near Iquitos all have dark red colored ligules.

Costus erythrocoryne grows only in areas of the Amazon basin in Colombia, Ecuador and Peru. These are areas that do not have a distinct dry season and the species can be found in flower year round.

DNA has been extracted from two samples of this species and found to be in a separate clade close to another basal flowering species, Costus longibracteolatus.

HORTICULTURAL NOTES:
Based on information at the Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI) this species is in ex situ cultivation at only 4 botanical gardens world wide. The cultivated form has sometimes been sold under the cultivar name 'Red Lollipop' and might be reported under that name. Cultivar registration published in the Heliconia Society Quarterly Bulletin, Vol. 20, No. 1, March, 2014.
