PLANT FAMILY: Costaceae
BOTANICAL NAME: Costus wilsonii
FORMAL SCIENTIFIC NAME: Costus wilsonii Maas
STATUS :Accepted
CONTINENT: Neotropical
SYNONYMS:

BOTANICAL NOTES:
This is an accepted neo-tropical Costus species. It was described as a new species in 1976 by Paul Maas. It was named after Robert Wilson who was director of the Las Cruces Botanical Garden (now Wilson Botanical Garden) near San Vito, Costa Rica. It is distinguished by its flower with a more well developed labellum, often reddish veined, but generally tubular, not completely open. The leaves have are long acuminate and typically wavy at the margins. The bracts are usually yellow but as Maas pointed out, "The colour of the bracts is highly variable as I observed during my visit at San Vito. The colour varied (in one specimen) from yellow, orange, reddish and green." I have observed this same phenomenon in my collection (R3144 & R3146) from Carla Black's garden in Volcan, Panama.

Holotype: collected in 1974 by Paul Maas at Fila Las Cruces, near San Vito de Java

This species is seldom found in cultivation and in nature it is found only at high altitudes (1300-2000 meters) in the Talamanca Mountains of Costa Rica and Panama. Despite its limited range, it is fairly common and I have assessed it at IUCN Red List as "Least Concern". My assessment can be found at http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/56349403.

ACCESSION NOTES:
I have four different accessions of this species. R3090 is from 1800 meters on top of a ridge at Reserva Durika in Costa Rica. It was not in flower in December 2006 when seeds were collected but I returned to the site in July 2011 and found a large population of the species in full flower and typical of the yellow bracts that characterize the species. It has not flowered for me in cultivation as of this writing. R3092 is from 1500 meters at La Amistad in Costa Rica near the Panama border. It has flowered well. The other collections were from Panama near the town of Volcan. R3144 (seeds) and R3146 (rhizome) are local in origin growing in Carla Black's garden. R3145 is from the property across the road from her finca. All the Panama collections have tended to have red or reddish bracts instead of yellow when growing in containers in my greenhouse and garden. However, the same collection produced "normal" yellow bracts growing at John Mood's garden in Hawaii. R3146 has been vouchered at the UC Berkeley, Jepsen Herbarium, UC2045841.

GINGERSRUS CATALOG LISTING:
Costus wilsonii is a high altitude Costus, growing up to 2000 meters in its home habitat in the Talamanca Mountains of Costa Rica and Panama. It has yellow bracts which sometimes turn reddish depending on the minerals in the soil. The flowers are bright yellow with red tips to the labellums. In habitat I have seen it growing in shady forest understory on ridges or steep slopes and in heavy leaf mulch.

It grows to about 1 1/2 meters tall and is fairly easy to grow and bring to flower. I thought it might not be heat tolerant, but has survived and even thrived a couple of hot Tallahassee summers with no problem.
