PLANT FAMILY: Costaceae
BOTANICAL NAME: Costus arabicus variegated form
FORMAL SCIENTIFIC NAME:
STATUS :
CONTINENT: Neotropical
SYNONYMS:
Costus arabicus, Costus dubius 'Variegatus',

BOTANICAL NOTES:
The variegated plant called Costus amazonicus in most nurseries and mail order sites is actually a form of Costus arabicus. This was verified by Dr. PJM and Hiltje Maas.

ACCESSION NOTES:
R1561 - Costus arabicus 'Variegatus' (known in horticulture as Costus amazonicus 'Variegatus') - smaller than non-variegated form, striking variegation, often more white than green. I bought this plant from Another Place In Time (see Nursery List) in Houston in June 1999. It was not marked except as "Spiral Ginger" but I called back the next day and was told it is "C. amazonica". Most of the leaves on my plant often revert to solid green.

R2498 was received from Jerry Seymore. I have propagated new plants from both these accessions and they have become mixed together. Some have reverted to green but I do still have several with strong variegation.

GINGERSRUS CATALOG LISTING:
Costus arabicus variegated - flower There are two variegated Costus species popular in the horticultural trade. One is the variegated form of Cheilocostus speciosus (the crepe ginger) and the other is a variegated form of Costus arabicus which was incorrectly identified many years ago as Costus amazonicus.

Costus arabicus is the type species of the genus and is found in South America. It has snowy white flowers with some markings on the labellum, and green bracts. The variegated form being sold here grows somewhat shorter than the type, and the variegation ranges from almost all white to just slivers of white on otherwise green leaves. There is a strong tendency in the plant to revert to solid green, so if you want to maintain the variegations, be sure to cut off any new shoots that come up solid green. If protected in winter it will grow to about 5 feet tall. Costus arabicus is also prone to branching of the stems, more so than other Costus. These branches are easily rooted an propagated into new plants.

Costus arabicus should be grown in part shade, in moist, fertile, organic soil. It can be grown in pots and will grow to a more compact size that way. Hardiness has been rated at zone 9.
