PLANT FAMILY: Costaceae
BOTANICAL NAME: Costus amazonicus
FORMAL SCIENTIFIC NAME: Costus amazonicus (Loes.) J.F. Macbr.:
STATUS :
CONTINENT: Neotropical
SYNONYMS:

BOTANICAL NOTES:
This is an accepted neo-tropical Costus species described by Loesner in 1929, supplemented by Macbride in 1931. Paul Maas split out a subspecies Costus amazonicus subsp. krukovii in 1972.

There are two subspecies of C. amazonicus: subsp. amazonicus (PID7467) and subsp. krukovii (PID4862). Photos and descriptions are shown on those separate web pages.

The variegated plant often found in cultivation under the name Costus amazonicus is actually a variegated form of Costus arabicus. See PID3236, determined to be Costus arabicus (NOT Costus amazonicus), verified by Dr. Maas.
