TAXONOMY NOTES BY BRIAN MIDDLEDITCH - Curcuma alismatifolia Gagnepain:

Proceedings of Second Symposium on Zingiberaceae - Distinguishing Characters of Curcuma Species and their Variations, by Puangpen Sirirugsa - Native of Thailand and Cambodia, easily recognized by the long slender and stiff peduncle, large erect coma bracts, usually pink. Illustration of staminodes = elliptic, acute. Anther = without spurs.
Also describes a Curcuma aff. alismatifolia ("Bua Komane") which is from northeastern Thailand, similar to C. alismatifolia with slender peduncle, long coma and broad flower bracts, but differs by color of bracts and the anther has spurs.

The Study of Zingiberaceae in Thailand, by Puangpen Sirirugsa - Curcuma alismatifolia Gagnep. Distinguished characters.- Peduncle long, slender and stiff. The coma bracts pink, large and erect. The trade name for this species is known as "Siam Tulip". Its bulbs are exported to Japan and Europe. Thailand.- SOUTHWESTERN: Utai-Thani. Distribution.- Cambodia.

HORTICULTURAL NOTES:

Le Jardin Ombragé - newly planted spring 2000, my specimen was purchased at Crowley's nursery, part of a shipment he just got in from southeast Asia. The height is about 3 ft tall. This specimen has a burgundy stripe along the mid rib. Flowers are pink. I have it growing in about 4 hours direct sun. Left in ground over winter. It returned okay but not as vigorous as last year, growing to 2 1/2 ft tall by August 2001. I saw fields of this beautiful Curcuma in NE Thailand, growing in full sun, grassy field, and would agree with the contributor below, that it grows best with ample sunlight. It also is variable as to the leaves, sometimes with and sometimes without the burgundy stripe along the midrib.

From: "Ruud Meeldijk" - (answering a question on zingibers@Yahoogroups.com) Curcuma alismatifolia has to stay in the full sun! If you would give them 1 or 2 hours light, the stems will be very tall. If the rain will start, they will get less light. The stems are too thin to carry the heavy flowers and will start to bend. Please plant them next time in the full sun! Other Curcuma's will bloom later than Curcuma alismatifolia. It is the rainiy season now in Chiangmai (where I live) and even some of the C. alismatifolia which always stay in the full sun are starting to bend when they have very big flowers.

GAINESVILLE TREE FARM - Glaucous fol. w/pink blooms, stalked infl., excellent cut fls

STOKES TROPICALS - A strikingly beautiful ginger that superficially resembles a tulip. Newly introduced from Thailand. Produces a beautiful dark, rose-pink inflorescence which makes a great cut flower. Has long narrow stiff leaves that resemble tulip leaves. Grows to 2' in medium sun. Foliage and inflorescence make outstanding display. Blooms appear in summer. Enjoys partial shade but can take full sun.

HORTICOPIA - Grows in USDA zones 8B to 11, Height: 18" to 24" / 45cm to 60cm, Prefers partial shade and moist soil

PLANTATION GARDENS - This species is being sold by some as the Southern Tulip. It is a top flowering Curcuma. The flower is pink and is 3 to 4 inches wide. The top of the flower spike is 6 or more inches above the foliage and is about 12 to 24 inches above the ground. It is a repeat bloomer on the new portion of the rhizome from summer thru fall. The leaves are about 18 inches long. This plant will grow in part shade, but it thrives in full sun. Native to the savannah areas of northern Thialand. PICTURE OF FLOWER.
